This October, the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, Southeast Asia's most renowned literary event, is set to celebrate its 10thanniversary. Alila Ubud, a boutique hotel and a key partner of the event is offering guests a unique chance to be at the very centre of the action.
Over five days, Ubud Writers and Readers Festival will feature over 130 writers across all genres and disciplines, including travel writers, songwriters, playwrights, poets, comedians and graphic novelists from all over the world.
The festival, taking place between the 11th-15th October, will feature an array of celebrated local and international authors, including bestselling UK author Sebastian Faulks (Birdsong, Devil May Care), Lionel Shriver (We Need to Talk about Kevin), publishing entrepreneur and Lonely Planet co-founder Tony Wheeler, legendary Australian cartoonist Michael Leunig. The Festival also welcomes 2013 Man Booker long-listed authors Ruth Ozeki (A Tale for the Time Being) and Tash Aw (Five Star Billionaire) as well as India’s ‘first literary popstar’ Amish Tripathi. Other international guests include David Vann (Legend of a Suicide), two-time Miles Franklin winner Kim Scott (That Deadman Dance), American talent Nami Mun, and one of France’s most prolific writers Alain Mabanckou.
A number of the festival’s events will be set in the Alila Ubud hotel sitting high up on the edge of the rich green Ayung River valley in the traditional Balinese hill village of Payangan. The resort is located just minutes from Ubud, the island’s cultural heart. The secluded courtyards, spacious terraces and private gardens make Alila Ubud the perfect setting for guests to unleash their passion for the written word, attend workshops and mingle with international and local writers.
Returning to its original theme 'Through Darkness to Light' in honour of Indonesia's beloved women's rights pioneer, Kartini.
